On February 27th we visited the Jennette Affleck School. Jennette was one of the members of my build team and was on her eighth build. This was the build site that she worked on last year and the school was dedicated to her. We were lucky enough to see the ceremony and how excited the children were to be in their new school building. Schoolbox also has a program called Supplies For School which provides students and teachers with the materials that they will need. The packages for the students consist of 4 notebooks, 2 pencils, eraser, ruler and a pencil sharpener. We got to hand out these packages to the students in the class. One moment that hit home with me is that how excited the students were to receive theses supplies. I will certainly think of this next year when I am handing out pencil after pencil to my students. Another moment that moved me was when I was watching the packages being handed out to the second grade students, and noticed that one of the students must have been around 14 or 15 years old. There he was excited to receive his package and how he realized the importance of education as he was there learning, when he didn’t need to be. It goes to show the work that this organization does in these communities to show how important education is.
It must have been a wonderful experience to give out those supplies and to see the excitement in the faces of those children!
